Immaculata, Pa. (Dec. 19, 2018) - After holding a 14 point lead going into the half, Alvernia University (3-7) fell to Immaculata University (4-8) 91-88 in a double-overtime shootout on Wednesday night at Immaculata.
Alvernia led for nearly all of the first half and held as high as a 15 point lead in early in the second half before the Mighty Macs went on a 12-2 run to tie the game up and ultimately force two overtimes en route to their win.
The Golden Wolves opened the scoring with a jumper from
Nick Youngkin and held a 6-2 lead three minutes into the game following layups from
Avery Walker and
Kyle Gordon.
The Mighty Macs got within one with 12 minutes remaining in the first half before the Golden Wolves began to pull away.
The Golden Wolves would score 27 points in the final 11 minutes of the first half to take the 39-25 lead into the break.
The Mighty Macs mounted a comeback in the second quarter, outscoring the Golden Wolves 43-29 over the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Immaculata tied it up at 58-58 with 6:44 remaining in the second half, and took the lead on a layup 30 seconds later.
The Mighty Macs and Golden Wolves traded baskets in the final six minutes of the second half.
Keon Taylor evened it up for the final time in regulation with two made free throws with 29 second left. A turnover by Immaculata with two second remaining kept the game tied and sent it into overtime.
The two teams again traded baskets in the first overtime, with neither team gaining more than a two point advantage. Immaculata held a two point lead with 12 seconds left, but the Mighty Macs fouled
Rob Young Jr., sending him to the line. Young Jr. made two free throws to tie the game at 80-80 and send it into a second overtime.
Alvernia had a three point advantage halfway through the second overtime, with NIck Youngkin hitting a jumper and converting the and-one to give the Golden Wolves an 86-83 advantage.
The Mighty Macs tied it up seconds later with a three point shot, but Alvernia pulled back ahead with a jumper from
Malik Green. Immaculata retook the lead after another made three-point shot and held a one point advantage in the final minute of the second overtime. Youngkin got off a three point shot with four seconds later, but missed. Alvernia fouled the Mighty Macs with just one second left, and Immaculata made both free throws to take the 91-88 victory.
Alvernia shot 50% from the floor, but the Golden Wolves were just 6-16 from beyond the arc.
Green led the team with a season-high 25 points and team-high 11 rebounds as the freshman collected his fourth double-double of the year.
Keon Taylor finished the night with 22 points and Youngkin had 15 points.
Kyle Gordon also reached double digits with 14 points.
Immaculata was led by Mike Piekarski, who broke Immaculata's single game scoring record with 36 points on the night.
Alvernia is off for the holiday and will return to action on Friday, December 28th. The Golden Wolves will face Huntingdon College in the first round of the Christopher Newport Captain's Shootout in Newport News, Virginia.
