Newport News, Va. (Dec. 28, 2018) - Huntingdon College (4-5) made two free throws with six second remaining to take the 68-67 win over Alvernia University (3-8) in the opening game of the Christopher Newport University Crowne Plaza Captains Shootout on Friday evening in Newport News.
After giving up the lead with 6:22 left in the game, Alvernia retook the lead with 18 seconds left. Alvernia got the ball off a bad pass and
Malik Green drove it to the net to put Alvernia up by one.
On Huntingdon's next position Alvernia's
Nick Youngkin was called for a shooting foul sending Huntingdon's BJ Barker to the line with six seconds left. Barker made both shots to give the Hawks 68-67 lead. The Golden Wolves inbounded the ball to Green who drove the length of the court and got off an off-balanced shot just outside the arc. The shot was off the mark and the Hawks hung on the for the win.
Huntingdon started off the game with a quick five points before Alvernia evened it up at 5-5 after two minutes of action. The Hawks and Golden Wolves traded the lead over the next ten minutes before Alvernia began to put some distance between itself and the Hawks.
Alvernia held a ten point advantage with three minutes remaining in the first half. The Hawks brought closed the gap to five points after an Alvernia turnover, but two made free throws by
Justin Thomas gave the Golden Wolves the 43-36 lead going into the break.
The Golden Wolves struggled to find their rhythm coming out of the break, allowing the Hawks to close in and ultimately take the win.
Alvernia was 16-25 in the first half, including 6-7 from beyond the arc, but the Golden Wolves were just 8-29 in the second half.
Green led the all players with a career-high 27 points. The freshman also had six boards and three assists.
Justin Thomas came off the bench and scored 14 points for Alvernia and was 5-6 from the line.
Barker led the Hawks with 21 points and was a perfect 5-5 from the line.
Huntingdon will face host Christopher Newport in the championship game. Alvernia will face Mount Saint Mary (NY) in the consolation game tomorrow at 2:00 PM. Christopher Newport defeated Mount Saint Mary 80-47 in the second game on Friday evening.
