Golden Wolves Hold Off Knights, 63-58 OT

Dadson Records Double-Double, Named To All-Tournament Team

Newport News, Va. (Dec. 29, 2018) - Mount Saint Mary College (NY) (7-3) hit a buzzer beater at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime, but Alvernia University (4-8) held off the Knights for a 63-58 win in the third place game of the Crowne Plaza Captain's Shootout, hosted by Christopher Newport University.

With six seconds left in regulation, Alvernia received the ball following a lane violation against the Knights on a free throw attempt. The inbounded ball was lost by the Golden Wolves on an errant pass, and the Knights got the ball back with just under six seconds remaining. The Knights gave the ball to Kendall Francis who fired off an off balanced shot from just beyond the arc as time expired. The ball went in, sending the game to overtime with the score tied at 52-52.

Both teams struggled to find a rhythm in overtime, with Alvernia scoring just four points in the opening three minutes. Mount Saint Mary's shooting went cold in overtime. The Knights scored just three points, all off free throws, until they hit a three point basket with eight seconds left. Alvernia took advantage of the Knight's shooting struggles and built a comfortable lead to hold on for the 63-58 win.

Alvernia scored the opening points of the game, with Nick Youngkin hitting a jumper in the opening minute of action. The Golden Wolves held a 6-3 lead after three minutes, but the Knights quickly game back and held a 9-6 advantage just under a minute later.

The Golden Wolves went on a quick 6-2 run to make it a 12-11 game with just under 14 minutes to play, but, again, the Knights answered and retook the lead.

The Knights and Golden Wolves traded the lead twice more over the remainder of the opening half, but the Knights held the two point advantage going into the break.

Alvernia's Avery Walker tied the game up at 30-30 in the opening seconds of the second half, and the Golden Wolves built up their lead to 46-39 with eight minutes left to play in regulation.

The Knights held the Golden Wolves to just six points over the final eight minutes, with Alvernia's only points coming off of free throws. The Knights took advantage and chipped away at the lead until they tied it up as time expired.

Alvernia finally got a layup to fall with 3:33 left in the overtime as the Golden Wolves would go on to get the win.

Alvernia's win today ends a six game skid for the Golden Wolves.

Youngkin finished the game with nine rebounds and 23 points, 19 of which game in the second half. Senior Anthony Dadson earned All-Tournament team honors as he recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Dadson was also 5-6 from the line and had five blocks.

Francis led Mount Saint Mary with 17 points and also earned All-Tournament honors.

Host Christopher Newport University won the tournament following a 79-52 win over Huntingdon College.

Alvernia returns to its MAC Commonwealth schedule on Thursday, January 3rd when the Golden Wolves host Stevenson University at 6:00 PM.
