Riverdale, NY (Feb. 3, 2018) - Alvernia University (4-4) swept a pair of matches at the College of Mount Saint Vincent Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon, defeating both New Jersey City University and College of Mount Saint Vincent 3-0.
Alvernia swept NJCU in the first match of the day, 3-0. The Golden Wolves took the first set 25-17, and went on to take the second and third sets at 25-18 and 25-16.
Josh Stewart led the Golden Wolves with 11 kills. Mike Monczeski had five blocks and 21 assists, and
Austin Rush finished the match with 11 digs.
In the second match of the day, Alvernia swept the College of Mount Saint Vincent 3-0, holding on in the first set, 26-24, and taking the second and third sets, 25-21 and 25-22.
Alvernia got off to a slow start in set one of the second match. The Dolphins got started the first set on a 6-0 run. The Golden Wolves slowly chipped away at the Dolphins lead and finally tied the first set up a 21-21. The Dolphins took back their lead on a
Collin Welteroth service error. A kill by
Josh Stewart gave the Golden Wolves the 25-24 advantage, and a block by
Justin Gibbs and
Myles Thomas sealed the first set win for the Golden Wolves.
The Golden Wolves led from the start of the second set, and took down the Dolphins 25-21 to take the 2-0 lead.
In the final set of the afternoon, the Dolphins held a 19-17 lead late. Alvernia overcame the deficit on a Dolphin service error, and took the set on a block by
Victor de Avila and
Ralph Lunati III. Â
Lunati III finished the second match with 11 kils. Thomas had five blocks, and Gibbs led with 33 assists and six digs.
The Golden Wolves return to the court on Wednesday afternoon when they host Arcadia University at Jack McCloskey Court. The match will be Alvernia's first with the MAC.
