Reading, Pa. (Mar. 17, 2018) - Alvernia University (11-11, 5-3) got a match-high 18 kills from sophomore Collin Welteroth in a 3-1 win over Wilkes University (6-16, 2-5) Saturday afternoon in MAC men's volleyball action at the Physical Education Center.
Alvernia jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a 25-15 win in the first set and a 25-20 win in the second. Â Alvernia had a 10-7 lead in the third set before Wilkes put together a 13-4 run to pull ahead 20-14.
Welteroth had kills on three of the next nine points for Alvernia which battled back to tie the match at 23-all, but Wilkes answered with back-to-back blocks to close out the 25-23 win.
Wilkes took five of the first six points in the fourth set, but Alvernia came back to take its first lead of the set, 14-13, on an ace from Victor de Avila. Â The Wolves went ahead 21-17 and took the match with a 25-21 win.
Logan McGinley joined Welteroth in double figures with 13 kills and Ralph Lunati III finished with 11. Â Justin Gibbs had 40 assists and Welteroth led the defense with 13 digs.
Alvernia continues the season Wednesday at Lancaster Bible.
