Reading, Pa. (March 18, 2018) – Alvernia University (11-0-1) swept Immaculata University (3-7) with a set of 10-2 and 3-2 wins to improve to an 11-0-1 start during non-conference softball action on Sunday afternoon at Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves got on the board for an early 1-0 lead when Morgan Psuik stole home in the bottom of the first.
The Golden Wolves added three in the bottom of the third to go up 4-0.
Mckenzie Miessau started off the scoring with a single to left field to score
Sarah Reinert.
Alyssa Acker drove in the next run with a sacrifice hit to third to bring in
Emily Carmella.
JoAnnah Lim capped off the inning with a triple to left field to bring home Miessau.
Alvernia added one in the bottom of the fourth with a Sarah Bystricki single to center to drive in Morgan Psuik, putting the Golden Wolves up 5-0.
The Mighty Macs got two back in the top of fifth, but Alvernia responded with a five run inning in the bottom of the fifth.
Jocelyn Flores started off the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with a double to left center to score Lim and Acker. A trio of illegal pitches by the Mighty Macs scored Flores.
Riley Shields scored the fourth run of the inning on a throwing error by Immaculata's catcher. Bystrycki scored the final run of the game with a ground out to third to bring in Psuik.
Shields pitched all five innings and struck out five to pick up the win. Shields improved to 7-0 on the season.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Immaculata struck first with a run in the top of the third. The Mighty Macs added a second run to take a 2-0 lead.
Alvernia tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth with an
Emily Carmella double to right to score Bystricki.
JoAnnah Lim then doubled to left center to score Carmella and tie the game up at 2-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Reinert tripled to right center in the second at bat of the inning. With two out and a full count, Carmella singled through the left side to score Reinert and give Alvernia the 3-2 victory.
Zoee Garis game in in relief to pick up her first career victory.
With the sweep, Alvernia improves to an 11-0-1 start. The Golden Wolves continue their schedule on Tuesday when they host Haverford.
