Reading, Pa. (April 21, 2018) - Alvernia University (25-10, 14-4) fell in game one, but came from behind in game two to split the Saturday MAC Commonwealth doubleheader against Stevenson University (16-18, 7-11) on Senior Day at Alvernia.
Alvernia dropped an 8-4 decision in game one of the day. The Golden Wolves then overcame an early 2-0 and forged off a comeback attempt by the Mustangs to take a 7-6 win in walk off fashion in game two.
In game one, the Mustangs hit a triple in the top of the first to score two and take a 2-0 lead.
Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly from
Ben Dubas to score
Dillon Dunne.
Stevenson scored another run in the top of the second and three more in the top of the third to take 6-1 lead.
The Golden Wolves again got one back in the bottom of third when
Nathan Sides grounded out to shortstop to bring in
Mike Cirilli.
The Mustangs added two more in the top of the seventh to take a 8-2 lead.
Alvernia added two more in the bottom of the seventh off of an RBI from
Matt Briner and a wild pitch by the Mustangs to score Sides. Dubas struck out for the final out of the game to end Alvernia's threat.
Thomas Malik started the game and pitched two and a third for the loss.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings.
Alvernia's offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning to go ahead 3-2.
Logan Levan started off the inning with a double to left field and, in the next at bat, Sides tripled down the left field line to bring Levan home. Briner then reached on a fielding error to score Sides.
Ian Shaffer drove in the final run of the inning with a double to left to score Briner.
In the top of the fifth, Alvernia added its fifth run on a sacrifice fly to drive in
Zach Zellers and put Alvernia up 4-2.
Stevenson responded with a four run inning to retake the lead and go up 6-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Wolves took advantage of pitching struggles by the Mustangs. Alvernia's first two batters,
Hunter Hart and Shaffer, were hit by pitches to put runners on first and second. The Mustangs threw a wild pitch in
Alex Salesky's at bat to advance Shaffer and Hart to second and third. Salesky was then walked to load the bases. In the following at bat, the Mustangs threw another wild pitch to score Hart and advance Shaffer and Salesky. Â Zellers then grounded out to shortstop to drive in Shaffer and tie the game up at 6-6.
The Mustangs had a runner in scoring position in the top of the eighth but were unable to convert.
In the bottom of the eighth, Alvernia started off with a Hart single to left center. Hart advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt from Shaffer. Salesky was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners.
Marcus Celiano came in to pinch hit and the Mustangs put a shift on to put five men in the infield and just two in the outfield. Celiano took advantage and knocked a walk off single to an unmanned left field to score Hart and give Alvernia the 7-6 win in eight innings.
John Catchmark went two innings, striking out five, and
Nicholas Marotta went 5 and a third, striking out four.
Michael Griffin pitched the final two thirds to pick up the win.
Sides led the offense in game two with a triple and two RBIs.
Alvernia clinched a playoff berth in game one of the Stevenson series on Friday. Arcadia and Hood faced each other and split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, with each clinching a playoff spot in the process.
The Golden Wolves return to the field on Tuesday when they travel to Susquehanna. Alvernia closes out its regular season with a MAC Commonwealth series against Lebanon Valley on Friday and Saturday.
