Alvernia Betters #10 TCNJ, 7-6

Kane Goes Seven-Plus To Earn The Win

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 9, 2018) - Freshman Brian Kane settled after allowing three runs in the first inning to go seven and two-thirds innings, and the offense batted around and scored five runs in the fourth as Alvernia University (18-8) defeated #10 TCNJ by a 7-6 final Monday afternoon in non-conference baseball at Angelica Park.

Designated hitter Ian Shaffer walked to lead off the home half of the fourth then the Golden Wolves followed with four straight singles off TCNJ starter Andrew Rowan.  Mike Cirilli drove in two runs with his bases-loaded single to give Alvernia and 5-4 lead, and Nathan Sides and Matt Briner made productive outs driving in a run each with ground outs to short and second.

TCNJ got a run back in the top of the fifth with a walk, a single, and a sacrifice fly, but Alvernia ended the threat when Sides and Cirilli turned a brilliant double play with the runner from first in motion.

The Lions crept closer with a solo homer in the top of the sixth, and Kane settled in to retire seven straight from there leaving with the bases empty and two out in the eighth.

Michael Griffin entered for a lefty-lefty match up against TCNJ firstbaseman Tommy McCarthy and got him to ground out to short on a full count.

Griffin stayed in for the save in the top of the ninth and retired the side in order on grounders around the horn to Cirilli at second, Sides at short, and Dillon Dunne at third.

Four different players had multi-hit games for the Wolves led by Briner who went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.  Alex Salesky was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Kane's line was 7.2 innings, six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.

Alvernia continues the non-conference slate traveling to Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday.
