Dallas, Pa. (Sept. 5, 2018) Sophomore
Morgan Mondschein took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity in overtime to fire a shot off, and give Alvernia University (1-2) a 2-1 overtime victory against Misericordia University (0-3) on Wednesday night at Misericordia.
The Golden Wolves struck first with a putback goal in the late in the 27th minute. Sophomore
Regan Downey sent a shot in that deflected off the Cougar keeper.
Freshman
Emily Hart picked up the rebound and fired it into net to put Alvernia up 1-0.
The Cougars answered quickly with a goal of their own two minutes later. Misericordia's Tori Carsley received an a corner attempt, and fired from the left edge of the arc past Alvernia goalie
Nicole Heinze.
Senior
Taylor Dorrin had a great look with a one-on-one attempt with the goalie late in the second half, but she shot just wide and the ball went off the post.
The Golden Wolves had a corner opportunity as time expired, but
Andrea Zimmerman sent it just wide off the left post.
Freshman
Brooke Spezialetti had two earlier shot opportunities in the first minute of overtime, but was shutdown by Cougar goalie Katelyn Campbell, who had two excellent saves.
Midway through the overtime period, sophomore
Morgan Mondschein had a one-on-one breakaway opportunity at midfield. Mondschein hit the ball past her defender and out ran her to regain possession before pulling up and firing a shot past her defender and Campbell from 15 yards out to give Alvernia the 2-1 victory.
Heinze and
Emma Beamesderfer split time in net, with Beamesderfer earning the win.
The Golden Wolves continue their non-conference schedule on Saturday, traveling down to Liberty University in Virginia for a neutral site competition against Lynchburg College.
