Williamsport, Pa. (Jan. 9, 2019) - Alvernia University (3-12, 0-6) was held to single digits in three quarters as Lycoming College (12-4, 6-1) took the 70-45 win in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Lycoming.
Alvernia scored 22 points in the third quarter and got within five, but could not catch the Warriors.
The Golden Wolves were held without a field goal for nearly the first six minutes of action until
Torie Zerbe knocked down a three, making it 9-4 in favor of the Warriors.
Abbie Zerbe hit a another shot from three point range with 30 seconds left in the first quarter, but Alvernia trailed Lycoming 16-7 after the first ten minutes of action.
Alvernia cut the Lycoming lead to five with a jumper from
Erin Malin with 8:53 left in the second quarter.
The Warriors went on a 12-5 run to close out the second quarter and took a 28-16 lead into the half.
Alvernia came out firing in the third quarter. After giving up the first basket of the second half to the Warriors, the Golden Wolves went on a 16-7 run. The run included three straight possessions of made three point shots as the Golden Wolves cut the Warriors lead to 37-32.
The Warriors held Alvernia to just six points the rest of the third quarter and took a 47-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Golden Wolves were held without a point for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter as the Warriors began to pull away. Alvernia would score just seven points in the final ten minutes as Lycoming took the 70-45 win.
The Golden Wolves were led by
Gabriella DeVito. DeVito scored scored 15 points, all of which came in the second half, four boards, and two steals.
Torie Zerbe had seven rebounds for Alvernia and five points.
Kayla Kline led the Warriors with 24 points.
Alvernia continues its MAC Commonwealth schedule on Saturday with a home contest against Lebanon Valley College.
