Reading, Pa. (Oct. 12, 2019) - Junior
Madison Potthoff converted a penalty stroke for Alvernia University (7-7, 1-2) in the 3rd minute of double overtime to lift Alvernia to a 1-0 win over Albright College (5-9, 1-2) on Saturday night in MAC Commonwealth field hockey action at Alvernia.
After
Morgan Mondschein was fouled in the circle for Alvernia, Potthoff stepped up to the line to take the shot for the Golden Wolves. Potthoff fired a shot high and inside the left post, beyond the dive of Albright's keeper.
Alvernia held the advantage in shots heading into extra time, but the Golden Wolves had to fight off four corner attempts from the Lions in the fourth quarter to keep it locked at 0-0. Beamesderfer made two saves for
Alvernia during the series of corners, and the Lions had one shot blocked by an Alvernia defender.
The Golden Wolves then had to play a man down for half of the first overtime after receiving a yellow card, but Alvernia's defense did not allow a shot to get off during that time. The Lions did get a shot off as time was expiring in the first overtime, but it was saved by Alvernia keeper
Emma Beamesderfer. Potthoff also got a look in the final minute of the first OT, but her shot was saved as well.
Potthoff would get a second chance though just three minutes later and she made that stroke count to lift Alvernia to its first MAC Commonwealth win of the season.
Beamesderfer finished the night with four saves for the Golden Wolves.
The Golden Wolves take a break from MAC Commonwealth play on Tuesday when they had to Cabrini University for a 4:00 PM matchup.Â
