Reading, Pa. (Oct. 9, 2019) - Susquehanna University (5-8) scored the only goal of the game in the 49th minute for a 1-0 win over Alvernia University (6-7) Wednesday evening in non-conference field hockey action at Alvernia.
Hunter Pitman finished a pass from Heather Casey to break the scoreless with with just over 11 minutes left in the game.
Alvernia generated a couple of chances in the first quarter.Â
Felicia Getz had a shot saved in the third minute of play as did
Makenzie Smeigh in the 13th minute. The Wolves drew their second corner of the quarter with just over two minutes left, and
Madison Potthoff had an attempt blocked by the River Hawks defense.
Susquehanna had a threatening chance midway through the second quarter when Annalee Smith ripped a shot on the break, but
Emma Beamesderfer turned it aside the keep the game scoreless.
Alvernia pressed for a pair of corners in the final minute of the quarter.Â
McKenzy Lilliock had a pair of chances right under the goalie's pads, but she was stopped both times.
Alvernia's best chance in the third came 10 minutes in when a loose ball found its way to the middle of the circle where Getz ripped a shot toward the far post that Susquehanna goalie Veronica Green stretched out to save.
Morgan Mondschein followed with another point blank opportunity a minute later, but once again Green was up to the task.
Alvernia continued the get the better of the chances late in the third quarter generating three straight corners, but the River Hawk defense blocked off every one.
Susquehanna broke the scoreless tie five minutes into the fourth. Casey beat the defense to a loose ball near the right endline and centered a pass back to Pitman who finished the shot.
Green finished with 11 saves for the River Hawks and Beamesderfer had two for the Wolves.
Alvernia returns to the conference schedule on Saturday when it hosts Albright College for the final game of a Homecoming tripleheader.
