Reading, Pa. (Nov. 11, 2019) - Junior Gabrielle De Vito scored a game-high 14 points and Alvernia University (2-0) defeated Swarthmore College (0-1) by a 55-45 final Monday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.
The Golden Wolves used a 17-5 advantage in the second quarter to build a 29-23 halftime lead and kept a comfortable margin the rest of the way.
"I'm really proud of how hard the girls played tonight," said Alvernia head coach
Rayne Reber. "We stress defense and want to be known for that. I thought the girls really pulled together defensively and that got our offense going."
Freshman center Cat Kramer led the way with seven points and fellow freshman
Dee McCormick added five. The Alvernia defense held Swarthmore to 1-for-10 shooting in the quarter.
"I'm very excited for the two freshmen, Cat Kramer and
Dee McCormick," said Reber. "I thought they came in and hit some big shots tonight and didn't play like freshmen."
De Vito hit a pair of 3s and scored on a layup midway through the third quarter to push a 4-point lead up to 12 points, 37-25.
Swarthmore cut the game to six points with eight minutes left in the game, but freshman
Dee McCormick scored five points to fuel a quick, 90-second, 9-0 run that put the Wolves up 53-38.
McCormick was the only other Alvernia player in double figures with 12 points.
Julia Ewen finished with a team-high 10 rebounds.
Swarthmore opened the game hitting from beyond the arc on its first three buckets and held an early 9-5 lead. The lead grew to eight points, 16-8, and the Garnet held an 18-12 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Alvernia continues the season at Penn State-Berks on Wednesday.
