Gabriella De Vito scored a career-high 29 points and
Torie Zerbe collected a career-high 18 rebounds to lead Alvernia University (3-0) to 77-65 win over Penn State Berks (0-2) in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at PSU Berks.
Alvernia jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the first quarter, but the Lions put up 24 points in the second frame to tie it up at 33-33 at the half.
The Golden Wolves scored the first points of the second half when
Torie Zerbe hit a layup on Alvernia's first possession of the third quarter. The Lions tied it back up with a layup of their on the following possession, but Alvernia retook the lead with a De Vito 3-pointer.
The Lions regained the lead on free throws just a minute later, but
Dee McCormick hit a layup with 6:55 remaining in the third quarter to give Alvernia the lead, and the Golden Wolves wouldn't look back.
Alvernia extended it leads to 12 points in the third quarter on a
Cathryn Kramer layup with 58 seconds remaining.
The Golden Wolves would get their lead all the way up to 21 points on a jumper from De Vito with 4:03 remaining in the game.
Several turnovers allowed Berks to get back within seven, but Alvernia would get its lead back up into the double digits on made free throws in the final minutes to take the 77-65 win.
De Vito finished her career night with 29 points, four rebounds, two steals, and a block. She was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line, and was 9-20 on field goal attempts, including 7-for-15 effort beyond the arc.
Torie Zerbe finished a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.Â
Dee McCormick finished with 13 points and five assists.
Abbie Zerbe finished with ten points and a career-high seven steals.
Cathryn Kramer blocked six shots on the evening, just one blocked shot shy of tying a 27 year old record.
Alvernia returns to action on Saturday when the Golden Wolves host Penn College at 1:00 PM in the first game of the Nonno Alby's Tip-Off Tournament.
