Brooklyn Downs Alvernia 70-56 To Win Tip-Off Tournament

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 17, 2019) - Brooklyn College (3-0) led wire-to-wire in a 70-56 win over Alvernia University (4-1) in the championship game of the Nonno Alby's Tip-Off Tournament at Alvernia on Sunday.

Brooklyn held Alvernia to three points, which game from a Julia Ewen layup and free throw, over the opening seven minutes. The Bulldogs took advantage of Alvernia's offensive struggles and jumped out to a 16-3 lead.

Ewen hit a pair of free throws and Jannelle Robinson knocked down a three as time expired in the first quarter, as the Golden Wolves trailed the Bulldogs 19-8 going into the second quarter.

Alvernia was the first to strike in the second quarter with Torie Zerbe making a layup with 7:49 left in the half to cut Brooklyn's lead down to single digits.

Torie Zerbe would go on to score Alvernia's next five points, but the Bulldogs matched Alvernia's efforts, maintaining a double-digit lead.

The Bulldogs went on a quick 5-1 run to close out the half and take a 34-22 lead into the break.

Brooklyn started off hot in the third quarter, making three straight 3-pointers to go up 43-25.

Alvernia's Dee McCormick knocked down a three of her own to end Brooklyn's hot streak and make it 43-28.

Both team's offensive efforts went cold, with a Cathrine Kramer free throw being the only point scored in a three and a half minute span.

The Bulldog offense heated back up, scoring nine points to Alvernia's six to close out the third quarter with a 52-35 lead.

Alvernia outscored Brooklyn 21-18 in the fourth quarter, including a 16-9 run over the final five minutes, but Brooklyn's lead would be too much to overcome as the Bulldogs took the 70-56 win.

Torie Zerbe led Alvernia with 10 points and seven rebounds. Ewen finished with nine points and six rebounds, and Amber Orban also had nine points. Kramer finished with four blocks and seven points.

Ewen and Kramer were named to the All-Tournament Team. Ewen finished with 18 rebounds and 11 points on the weekend. Kramer finished with 17 points, seven blocks, and seven rebounds.

Brooklyn's Taylor George was named tournament MVP, and Chanel Jemmott also earned All-Tournament Team honors for the Bulldogs.

The Golden Wolves have nine days off before returning to action with a road game against Cedar Crest College on November 26th.
