Madison, NJ (Nov. 9, 2019) - Alvernia University (2-7, 1-6) scored 28 points in the third quarter and had the first two touchdowns of the fourth quarter to
come within two scores and nearly pulling off the comeback before FDU Florham (3-7, 2-6) scored the final two touchdowns in an 84-56 win over Alvernia in MAC Football action on Saturday at FDU Florham.
The Golden Wolves scored 42 points in the second half after trailing the Devils 49-14 at the half, but the Alvernia defense could not hold off FDU Florham, who added 35 more points of their own in the second half.
Alvernia opened the scoring with a 54 yard touchdown run up the Alvernia sideline by
Malcolm Carey on the opening drive of the game.
The Devils tied it up at 7-7 on their second drive of the game with an eight yard touchdown run from Alnazir Blackman.
FDU Florham scored three straight touchdowns after that to jump out to a 28-7 lead before Alvenria cut it to 28-14 on a 22 yard touchdown run by
Daniel Scott.
The Devils defense shutdown Alvernia's offense the remainder of the first half while the FDU Offense scored three more touchdowns to take the 49-14 lead into the half.
Alvernia came out of the half and forced a 3-and-out for the Devils to keep it at 49-14. Alvernia then scored on a
Darrius Sample touchdown pass to
Monzell Ware to make it 49-21.
The two teams then traded touchdowns over the third before Alvernia scored two straight touchdowns to threaten and get within 13 points with 11:44 remaining in the game. Alvernia made it 69-49 on a 14 yard touchdown reception by
Owen Morton and got within 13 points on a 13 yard keeper from Sample.
The Devils held off any more points from the Golden Wolves while they scored two more times to take the 84-56 win over Alvernia.
84 points is the most points Alvernia has ever given up, its also the most points the Devils have ever scored in a game. 56 points is the most points
Alvernia has scored in a game since the program began last year.
The two teams combined for 1,258 total yards, with FDU Florham racking up 703 yards of total offense to Alvernia's 555 yards.
Malcolm Carey ran for 224 yards and three touchdowns. Sample ran for 110 yards and added 204 more yards in the air. He was 17-for-27 with three touchdowns behind center.
Neeko Scurlock had five receptions for 117 yards.
Otis Harold also finished with five receptions and had 46 yards.
Tajon Whiten led Alvernia's defense with six tackles.

Ryan Long was a perfect 8-for-8 on extra point attempts for the Golden Wolves.
Alvernia closes out their second season on Saturday at home against Misericordia.
