Alvernia Still Controls Destiny For Final Playoff Spot

Reading, Pa. (Feb. 14, 2019) - A long 3 at the buzzer caromed off the backboard and the rim and Albright College (7-16, 6-9) held on for a 66-64 win over Alvernia University (11-13, 6-9) Thursday evening in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.

The lead changed hands five times in the final four minutes, and Albright sophomore Sam Majekodunmi gave the Lions a 2-point lead hitting 1-of-2 from the free throw line with seven seconds left.

Alvernia inbounded to Keon Taylor who passed ahead to Nick Youngkin in the frontcourt.  Youngkin took a dribble, had to double clutch to avoid a defender and nearly banked home a game-winner as time expired.

Alvernia finishes the regular season at Lebanon Valley on Saturday and still controls its own destiny to make the MAC Commonwealth postseason.  A win puts Alvernia in as a 5-seed in Monday's play-in game. An LVC win on Saturday would give Albright the #5 seed regardless of its decision against Stevenson in Saturday's finale.

Albright senior Jared Rappoport had a game-high 20 points on Thursday to go with 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.  Three other players reached double figures for the Lions. Alvernia got a team-high 18 from Malik Green, 17 from Justin Thomas, and 15 from Keon Taylor.

Albright held the largest lead of the first half at 5 points, 24-19, but Alvernia quickly erased that on a 3 from Avery Walker and a short jumper from Taylor.

The Golden Wolves pushed ahead by four with Green knocking down a 3 and Walker adding another to put Alvernia up 32-28.

Albright's Christian Lane hit a 3 with 90 seconds left as the final bucket of the half and the teams hit the break tied at 34-all.

Albright built its second half lead up to seven points, 48-41 with 11 minutes to go, but Alvernia put together a 9-2 run to tie the game at 50-50 and neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way.
