Union, NJ (Feb. 16, 2019) - Drew University (1-1) used scored five runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to take a 10-7 win over Alvernia University (0-1) in non-conference baseball action at Kean's Jim Hynes Stadium.
Alvernia had a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth before Drew's big inning. The Rangers got their first batter of the inning on base with a single to left center, and had two on after the second batter was hit by a pitch. The Rangers took advantage and hit a three run home run to make it 4-3. The Rangers took a 5-4 lead with a two out single through the left side that scored two.
Drew added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Rangers scored on a single up the middle and added two more on a dropped foul ball. The Rangers capped off the inning with a run scored on a passed ball to make it 9-4 heading into the seventh, and added one more in the bottom of the seventh with a sac fly to left field.
Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the eighth with a single up the middle from
Colin Rieger to score
Matt Briner to make it 10-5.
The Golden Wolves were threatening late in the top of the ninth with
Ian Shaffer scoring on a ground out by Nate Sides. Alvernia scored again on the next at-with
Mike Cirilli coming home on a single up the middle by Briner. But, Alvernia's comeback attempt came up short as the Rangers got of the inning with Briner being thrown out at second on a fielder's choice.
Cirilli, Briner, and Rieger finished with two RBIs each. Cirilli and Briner also finished with two hits to lead the Alvernia offense.
Nicholas Marotta got the loss on the mound following 4.2 innings pitched. Marotta struck out six, but gave up five runs and allowed four hits.
Alvernia heads back to Kean on Monday for a 3:00 PM game.
