Alvernia Drops A Pair Of Matches At Wilkes Tri-Match

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (Feb. 23, 2019) - Alvernia University (4-9, 1-3) dropped a pair of matches in Middle Atlantic Conference men's volleyball action at Wilkes University Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Wolves pushed Messiah College (8-4, 5-0) to five sets in the opener then fell 3-1 to Wilkes (6-7, 2-3) in the final match of the day.

Alvernia struggled with in the first set of the Messiah matching committing nine errors and posting a negative hitting percentage in a 25-14 loss. The Wolves rebounded to hit over .300 in each of the final four sets.  They pounded down 15 kills with just three errors in the second set tying up the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 win.

Alvernia scored a pair of points late in the third set to pull within a point at 24-23, but Messiah closed out the set on a kill from Noah Shreiner for a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was tight the whole way with Alvernia leading by four points twice.  Messiah pulled within one at 22-21, but Alvernia scored the last three points to level the match at 2-2.

Messiah jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the deciding set, but Alvernia battled back to pull within a point three times late in the set, but couldn't finish the comeback with Messiah taking a 15-13 win.

Alvernia took a commanding 25-15 win in the first set of the match vs Wilkes, but the Colonels went up 2-1 with back-to-back 25-19 wins.

The fourth set was back and forth with Alvernia taking a 24-22 lead on an ace from Spencer Matthews.  Wilkes got the ball back on a sideout and scored two more for a 25-24 lead. The teams alternated scoring with Wilkes eventually closing the match with a 29-27 win.

Alvernia returns home to host Arcadia University on Wednesday.
