First Set Comeback Leads Alvernia To 3-0 Win Over Elizabethtown

Stewart Leads Alvernia With 15 Kills

Reading, Pa. (Feb. 7, 2019) - Alvernia University (2-4) needed a comeback win in the opening set then finished off a 3-0 win over Elizabethtown College (3-5) Thursday evening in non-conference men's volleyball at Jack McCloskey Court.

Etown had a 21-18 lead in the first set and gave up a side out on a service error.  Alvernia junior Mitch Sterkenburg served four straight points and burned through two Etown timeouts as the Golden Wolves went ahead 23-21.  Etown answered with three straight points and had set point, but Alvernia fought it off on a kill from Victor de Avila.

The teams alternated points with Alvernia closing out the match, 27-25, with three straight kills from de Avila.

After switching sides for the second set, Etown ran out to an early 7-1 lead.  Alvernia clawed back into the set eventually tying it at 12-12 on a block by Dalton Hartman and Aaron Kuhlman.  Neither team led by more than two points until de Avila ran off four straight points for a 24-19 lead. After a sideout, Josh Stewart finished the set with a kill.

Alvernia had leads of 7-3 and 14-6 in the third set and eventually closed the match with a 25-14 win the final set.

Stewart led the Wolves with 15 kills.  Hartman had 31 assists. Jon Demeter had 16 digs.

Alvernia continues the season Saturday at the Ramapo Tri-match.
