Bethlehem, Pa. (Mar. 12, 2019) - Moravian College (3-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first six minutes and never looked back as the Greyhounds downed Alvernia University (2-2) 16-8 on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Moravian.
The Greyhounds opened the scoring after 26 seconds of action and added four more in the next four and a half minutes to take a 5-0 lead before Alvernia got on the board.
Rachel Judge put Alvernia on the board with 22:46 left in the first half, but the Greyhounds matched that with a goal of their own to go up 6-1.
The Golden Wolves added two more on goals from
Erika Whitmoyer and
Brittany Defibaugh in the remainder of the first half, but the Greyhounds extended their lead 12-3 going into the break.
The Greyhounds held a double-digit lead, 13-3, with 27:18 left in the game before the scoring went cold for ten minutes.
Alvernia ended the scoreless drought with Defibaugh's second goal of the afternoon to get within nine at 13-4.
The Greyhounds made it 14-4 two minutes later, but Alvernia scored three quick goals in just over a minute to cut Moravian's lead in half at 14-7.
The Greyhounds would go on to score two of the final three goals of the game to earn the 16-8 win.
Defibaugh led Alvernia's offense with two goals and two assists.
Katharine Giannaras played all 60 minutes in the net for the Golden Wolves, making 20 saves.
Alvernia returns to action on Thursday when the Golden Wolves open their home schedule against Neumann University at 4:00 PM.
