Reading, Pa. (Mar. 14, 2019) - After leading 5-0 to start the game, Alvernia University (2-3) fell to Neumann University (4-1) 15-14 in overtime in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Thursday afternoon at Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves opened the scoring with five goals in eight minutes of action, including two from
Rachel Judge and two from
Brittany Defibaugh, to hold the early advantage.
Alvernia's scoring went cold as the Knights went on an 8-1 run to close out the first half with an 8-6 lead.
The Knights scored two more to open the scoring in the second half and take a 10-6 lead.
Alvernia's offense came back to life as
Erika Whitmoyer scored two goals in 30 seconds to bring Alvernia within two.
Gianna Taffo added one more a minute later to cut the Knight's lead to 10-9.
The Knight's their lead back to two, 11-9, before Alvernia tied it up at 11-11 with goals from Whitmoyer and Defibaugh.
The Knights again retook a two goal lead, 13-11, before Alvernia tied it up at 13-13 on a Taffo goal and took a 14-13 lead on a man-down goal by
Madison Hengey.
The Knights scored with 2:33 left in regulation to tie it up at 14-14.
A minute and ten seconds into the first overtime period, the Knights took an Alvernia turnover the distance of the field and scored a golden-goal to end it at 15-14.
Taffo and Whitmoyer led Alvernia's offensive efforts with four goals each. Whitmoyer also added an assist.
Kathrine Giannaras played the entirety of the game in net for Alvernia, making 17 saves on 32 shots on goal.
