Reading, Pa. (Mar. 20, 2019) - Susquehanna University (4-4) went on a 5-1 run to close out the first half and take a 10-4 lead en route to a 16-10 win over Alvernia University (2-4) on Wednesday night in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves opened the scoring with a goal from
Erika Whitmoyer after 90 seconds of action to go up 1-0.
The River Hawks responded with three goals in less than a minute to go up 3-1, but got two back with goals from
Rachel Judge and Whitmoyer to tie it up at 3-3.
The River Hawks would again score two quick goals to go back up 5-3, but Alvernia got within one with a goal from
Gianna Taffo to make it 6-4 with 14:09 left in the first half.
Susquehanna would score the next five goals to go up 10-4.
Judge scored with 2:18 left in the first half to end the River Hawks scoring run and make it 10-5 in favor of Susquehanna going into the half.
Whitmoyer opened the scoring for Alvernia with a goal 40 seconds into the second half to make it 10-6, but Susquehanna scored the next two to extend its lead to 12-6.
Alvernia again got back within four on goals from Whitmoyer and
Brittany Defibaugh, but the Golden Wolves could not stop the River Hawks offense has Susquehanna scored the next three to go up 15-8.
Alvernia would score two more on the afternoon, with Judge and Whitmoyer each adding a goal, but the River Hawks lead would be too much to overcome. Susquehanna sealed the win with its final goal of the evening coming with 1:24 left to play to make it 16-10.
Whitmoyer led Alvernia's offense with five goals. Judge finished the evening with three.
Katharine Giannaras played all but 2:28 for Alvernia in net. She finished with 19 saves on the afternoon.
The Golden Wolves continue their homestand on Saturday when they host Marywood at 1:00 PM.
