Brockport Holds On For 7-5 Win At Alvernia

Esposito Drives In Two For Golden Wolves

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 19, 2019) - The College at Brockport (6-5) put up three 2-run innings and held on for a 7-5 win at Alvernia University (10-5) Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Angelica park.

The Golden Eagles scratched out a run in the top of the first when Nicholas Pastore blooped a double to center, took third on a groundout, and barely beat a throw home on a grounder to third.

Alvernia took the lead with with two runs in the bottom of the first inning aided by an error by the Brockport left fielder.  Nathan Sides doubled to center with two out and scored when a routine fly ball off the bat of Gavin Blankenbiller was dropped in left. Franco Esposito singled down the right field line to put runners and the corners and Blankenbiller scampered home on a wild pitch.

Brockport took the lead back with two runs in the top of the third on three straight base hits and a sacrifice fly, then added to it with two in the seventh and two more in the top of the ninth.

Alvernia sent a string of pinch hitters to the plate in the home half of the ninth and got the tying run to the plate.

Trailing 7-2, Kyler Newton and Luke Wetzel both walked with one out and Luca Grammatica was drilled with a pitch to load the bases.  A wild pitch brought in the first run and Esposito looped a double down the left field line with two out for two more to make the score 7-5 and bring the tying run to the plate.

The Brockport shortstop ranged to his right to field an Alex Salesky grounder and Salesky was called out on a bang-bang play to end the game.

Brian Kane went four innings and gave up three runs and took the loss.  Sides was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Esposito was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Alvernia returns to the conference schedule this Friday at Lebanon Valley College.
