Alvernia Sweeps Lebanon Valley, 17-12 And 6-4

Sides Leads Offense In Opener, Marotta Shines In Game Two

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 23, 2019) - Alvernia University (12-5, 5-0) gave up eight runs in the first inning of the day and came back to sweep a doubleheader over Lebanon Valley College (9-6, 2-2) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball at Angelica Park.

The Dutchmen sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning of game one and held an 8-0 lead before the Golden Wolves had a chance with the bats.

Alvernia bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the first and put up crooked numbers in five of six innings for a 17-12 win.

Jack Fenwick hit a game-tying 2-run home run in the fifth inning--the first hit of his career--and Colin Rieger drove in a run later in the inning for a 12-11 lead.  LVC tied it with a solo homer in the top of the sixth, but Alvernia answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth for the win.

Kyle Gaynor allowed a run on four hits over two innings to pick up the win in game one.  Nate Sides went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Mike Cirilli, Franco Esposito, Colin Rieger, and Connor Boyle had two hits each.

Alvernia had three two-run innings in game two in support of Nick Marotta for a 6-4 win.  Esposito went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs. Ian Shaffer walked twice and scored twice, and Cirilli added two runs.

Marotta went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.

Alvernia took a 4-0 lead on run-scoring hits from Esposito and Alex Salesky in the fourth and scored two insurance runs on a walk and a hit by pitch in the bottom of the sixth.

The two teams square off in game three of the three-game series on Sunday--a game rescheduled from Friday.
