Pomona, NJ (Mar. 19, 2019) - Alvernia University (7-7) was swept by Stockton University (8-8) in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Stockton.
The Golden Wolves fell 8-4 in the first game of the afternoon. Alvernia then fell 4-2 in the second game, which was called after six innings due to darkness.
Alvernia opened the scoring in the top of the first in game one.
Sarah Reinert got Alvernia started with a lead-off single up the middle, and was advanced to second by
Morgan Psiuk singling up the middle in the next at-bat.
JoAnnah Lim then brought Reinert home with an RBI single to right.
Stockton tied it up at 1-1 in its half of the first, and added two more in the bottom of the second to go up 3-1.
Alvernia allowed just one hit over the third and fourth innings, but Stockton added three more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
The Golden Wolves cut the lead down to 6-4 in with a three run top of the sixth.
Analise Fouracre got Alvernia started with a single up the middle in the second at-bat of the inning, and scored on a Psiuk sacrifice hit to second.
Sara Campbell, who reached on an error, and Reinert, who reached on a walk, scored on a two-run single to right by Lim.
The Ospreys added two on to their lead in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-4.
The Golden Wolves couldn't get anything going in the top of the seventh and fell 8-4.
Riley Shields went five innings for Alvernia, striking out five, in the loss. Alvernia's offensive efforts were led by Lim, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia again took the early lead in the top of the first. Psiuk reached on a single to shortstop and came home on groundout by
Sarah Bystrycki to put Alvernia up 1-0.
Stockton tied it up in the bottom of the first on a single down the left field line.
Alvernia retook the lead in the top of the third when Bystrycki drove in her second run of the game with an RBI single up the middle to drive in Fouracre.
Stockton hit a solo home run in the second at-bat of the bottom of the third to tie it up at 2-2.
The Ospreys took the lead with a two-run bottom of the fifth
Alvernia got the tying run to the plate in the top of the sixth, but could not convert.
The game was called for darkness after Alvernia's at-bat in the top of the sixth.
Ally Decker went four and two thirds for Alvernia, striking out one. She gave up just one earned run after the Alvernia defense finished with four errors.
Alvernia's offense was led by Fouracre, who went two-for-two with one run scored, and Bystrycki, who finished one-for-three with two RBIs.
Alvernia continues on the road on Saturday with its MAC Commonwealth opener at Lebanon Valley College.
