Reading, Pa. (Mar. 24, 2019) - Alvernia University (11-7) overcame a four run deficit in game two to complete the two-game sweep against Penn State Berks (8-6) on Sunday in non-conference softball action at Alvernia.
Alvernia won the opening game 3-0, and took game two 14-7.
In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia was held to just one hit, a single by
Emily Carmella, until the fifth inning.
Analise Fouracre got Alvernia's second hit of the day a double to the right gap.
Sarah Reinert reached on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat to put two on for
Morgan Psiuk. Psiuk took advantage with a double to right center to drive in Fouracre and Reinert and put Alvernia up 2-0.
The Golden Wolves added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with
Riley Shields singling to right to bring home
JoAnnah Lim.
Alvernia allowed one hit in the top of seventh, securing the shutout.
Shields went the distance for Alvernia on the rubber, striking out five and allowing six hits.
Psiuk led Alvernia's offensive efforts with a hit and two RBIs.
In game two of the afternoon, Berks took an early 1-0 lead after the first and led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third.
Alvernia took the lead with a three run bottom of the third after
Sarah Bystrycki drove in Fouracre and Reinert with a single to right, and Lim drove in Bystrycki with a
single of her own to right to give Alvernia the 3-2 advantage.
The Lions offense opened up in the top of the fourth with a five runs scored on four hits to put the Lions up 7-3.
Alvernia began to chip away at Penn State's lead, starting with a three run bottom of the fourth.
Sarah Reinert loaded the bases with a two-out walk. Psiuk took drove in
Hope Robinson and
Alyssa Acker in the next at-bat with a single to center field. Reinert also scored on the play after the center fielder made a fielding error to bring Alvernia within one, 7-6.
Ally Decker retired the side in the top of the fifth, and the Golden Wolves tied it up at 7-7 in their half of the fifth. Robinson reached on an error, allowing
Emily Carmella to score on the play and tie up the game.
Alvernia's offense broke open the game with a two-out seven-run effort in the top of the sixth to put Alvernia up 14-7. Carmella got the scoring started by driving in two with a single.
Kerstin Koenig walked in the next at-bat to put two on for the Golden Wolves. In a pinch hit appearance, Shields drove in Militello, who was pinch running for Carmella, for the third run of the inning. Robinson kept things going with a single up the middle to bring in Koenig, doubled down the left field line to drive in Shields. Psiuk capped off Alvernia's big inning with a two-run single through the left side to bring in Robinson and Reinert.
The Golden Wolves allowed the first batter to get on in the top of the seventh, but Decker retired the next three to complete the sweep.
Decker earned the win in a relief appearance, striking out two and allowing three hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
Psiuk again led Alvernia's offensive efforts, going three-for-four and driving in four. She finished the day with six RBIs. Alvernia finished the game with 15 hits.
The Golden Wolves return to the field on Wednesday when they host Stevenson University in MAC Commonwealth action.
