Immaculata, Pa. (Mar. 28, 2019) - Alvernia University (13-8-1) fell in game one to Immaculata University (9-2-1), but rallied for a tie in game two of non-conference softball action on Thursday evening at Immaculata.
The Golden Wolves fell in game one, 9-5. They tied with the Mighty Macs in game two, 3-3.
In the first game of the afternoon, Alvernia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after
Sarah Bystrycki doubled to center field to drive in
Sarah Reinert.
The Mighty Macs offense quickly responded with a six run bottom of the first to go up 6-1.
Alvernia cut the lead down to one with a four run performance in the top of the third.
Analise Fouracre got Alvernia started with a single to right field to lead off the inning, and Reinert singled through the left side in the next at bat. Bystrycki drove in the first run of the inning with a single to center to drive in Fouracre.
JoAnnah Lim then doubled down the left field line to drive in Reinert, and Shields drove in the third run of the inning with a single up the middle to bring in Bystrycki. Acker capped off the inning with a double to the right gap to bring in Lim.
Alvernia allowed one hit to the Mighty Macs in the bottom of the third to stay within one, and threatened in the top of the fourth with bases loaded and one out. But the Golden Wolves hit into a double play to end the threat.
The Mighty Macs went on to add three in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 9-5.
Immaculata retired Alvernia in order in the top of the seventh to get the 9-5 win.
Alvernia used three pitchers in game one.
Zoee Garis led the way with a four inning relief appearance. She struck out three and allowed five hits.
Reinert went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, with two runs scored and a walk, to lead Alvernia's offense. Bystrycki went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia's offense again took an early lead in the top of the first. Lim hit a double to the right gap to drive in Bystrycki and Psiuk and put Alvernia up 2-0.
The Mighty Macs matched Alvernia in the bottom of the first with a two run performance of their own.
Immaculata broke the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fourth a solo homer to left center to lead off the inning.
Alvernia tied it back up at 3-3 when
Analise Fouracre scored on an errant pick-off attempt with runner's on the corners.
The Mighty Macs had the game-winning run on second in the bottom of the seventh with daylight quickly fading away, but Alvernia got out of the threat behind a solid relief appearance by
Kealey Smith in the circle.
The game was called for darkness following the seventh inning to end it at a 3-3 tie. The 3-3 tie is just the third time in the past 18 seasons that Alvernia has ended in a tie.
Decker went 4.2 innings in the start, striking out one and allowing four hits. Smith also strukout one in 2.1 innings of relief work.
Lim went 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs and a walk to lead Alvernia's offense in game two. Bystrycki also recorded two hits in a 2-for-4 performance.
The Golden Wolves return home and return to MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday when they host Messiah College starting at 1:00 PM.
