Reading, Pa. (Mar. 30, 2019) - Alvernia University (14-7-1, 7-2) won in the tenth inning to finish the first game of the series that was suspended on Friday, but was swept by Hood College (14-6-1, 6-3) in the doubleheader of MAC Commonwealth baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Alvernia.
In the halted game,
Mike Cirilli hit a single down the left field line to score
Ian Shaffer and put Alvernia up 8-7 in the top of the tenth.
Cirilli then came in in a relief appearance on the mound and retired the side with two strikeouts and a groundout to secure the 8-7 win.
Cirilli earned the save while
Kyle Gaynor picked up the win.
Cirilli led the offensive efforts with a 4-for-6 performance and an RBI.
Franco Esposito went 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
Game one of the doubleheader was a pitching duel until late.
Alvernia was the first to strike in the bottom of the sixth.
Nick Nutile hit a triple to left field to score
Alex Salesky and put Alvernia up 1-0.
Hood responded with a three run seventh. The Blazers tied it up on a single to first and took the lead on a single to left. They added a third run on a wild pitch to go up 3-1.
Cirilli walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but the next three batters were retired as Hood took the 3-1.
Nicholas Marotta pitched all seven four Alvernia, striking out four.
In game two, Hood took advantage of three straight big innings to take the 12-4 win.
The Blazers plated three in the top of the second, but Alvernia got one back on a Nutile RBI single to right.
Hood extended its lead to 6-1 in the top of the third, and added another four in the top of the fourth to make it 10-1.
Alvernia got two back in the fourth, with RBI singles from
Colin Rieger and
Joe Ginder to make it 10-3.
The Blazers scored a run in the sixth and added one more in the seventh to extend its lead to 12-3.
Alvernia plated one in the bottom of the seventh off an Esposito single to left, but did not threaten.
Jake Reese picked up the loss in 2.1 innings pitched.
Nathan Sides,
Gavin Blankenbiller, and Nutile finished with two hits each.
Alvernia returns to the field on Monday when they host Keystone at 4:00 PM.
