Clermont, Fl. (March 4, 2019) - Alvernia University (5-1) continued its hot start in Florida with a sweep on day two of action at the Spring Games, earning a 4-3 win over Adrian College (1-2) and a 19-2 win over Wittenberg (0-1).
In Alvernia's first game of the day, the Golden Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an
Riley Shields RBI single to center that drove in
JoAnnah Lim.
Alvernia's bats went cold over the next four hittings, getting just two hits - singles from
Analise Fouracre and Shields, on ten at-bats.
The Golden Wolves found their rhythm again in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs, to take a 3-0 lead.
Sarah Reinert got things going with a two-out single through the right side.
Morgan Psiuk followed with a triple to drive in Reinert. Lim then reached out a fielding error by the center fielder, scoring Psiuk on the play.
Alvernia added what would be a much needed insurance run in the top of the sixth. Shields reached on single in the first at-bat of the inning, and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Hope Robinson.
Emily Carmella then drove in Shields with a double to center field to give Alvernia the 4-0 advantage.
Adrian threatened in the bottom of the seventh. The Bulldogs scored two with a bases-loaded single, and got within after stealing home during a run-down attempt - which was ruled as obstruction - between first and second.
Ally Decker came in for Shields on the mound and forced a fly-out to left field to end the game.
Shields went six and two thirds on the mound for Alvernia. The junior struck out three and allowed seven hits to pick up the win, while Decker picked up her first save of the season.
Shields led Alvernia's offensive efforts in game one, going 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
In game two on the day, Alvernia started off hot and never looked back in a 19-2 win over Wittenberg.
The Golden Wolves scored one run in the top of the first, an RBI single by Bystrycki to score Lim, to get things started.
Alvernia broke it open with an eight run top of the second. Psiuk got things started with a two-run single up the middle, and Bystrycki added one with an RBI single up the middle. Shields,
Kerstin Koenig, and Fouracre all added runs during their at bats with walks or hit-by-pitches. Acker also added one with an RBI single to left field.
The Golden Wolves had another big inning in the fourth. Alvernia added seven to 16-0 advantage.
Alvernia added its final three runs of the game in the top of the fifth, with Lim, Bystrycki, and Shields all driving in runs, to hold the 19-0 lead.
Wittenberg got two on the board in the bottom of the fifth, but Alvernia would take the 19-2.
Decker struck out four en route to her complete-game win.
Bystrycki went 3-for-5 with four RBIs to lead Alvernia's offensive efforts.
The Golden Wolves continue at the Spring Games on Tuesday, with 9:00 AM game against Wartburg and an 11:15 AM game against RPI.
