Early Start Leads Alvernia Past US Merchant Marine, 16-5

Rieger Drives In Four To Lead Offense

Ft. Myers, Fla. (Mar. 6, 2019) - Alvernia University (5-2) scored five runs in the first inning in a 16-5 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy (4-1) Wednesday morning in non-conference baseball action at the Player Development Complex.

Colin Rieger went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Golden Wolves and drove in four runs to lead the Alvernia offense.  The senior outfielder also launched a 2-run home run to add on in the fourth.

Six of the nine starters in the Alvernia lineup had at least two hits in the game.  Alvernia finished with 20 base hits as a team reaching the 20-hit plateau for the first time since a 30-hit outburst against Rivier on March 8, 2017--a game also played at the PDC.

Ian Shaffer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, and Nate Sides was 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs.

Brian Kane earned the win going seven innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.  Frank Merlino and Matt Brennan threw an inning each to close out the game.

Alvernia will continue the spring break games facing Otterbein on Thursday at noon.
