Six-Run Seventh Leads Thiel Past Alvernia, 9-7

Sides Picks Up 100th Career RBI

Ft. Myers, Fla. (Mar. 5, 2019) - Thiel College (2-1) scored six runs in the seventh inning en route to a 9-7 win over Alvernia University (4-2) Tuesday morning in non-conference baseball action at Terry Park.

Alvernia shortstop Nate Sides drove in three runs for the Golden Wolves to reach 100 career RBIs the day after he reached 200 career hits.

Alvernia took a 6-3 lead with three runs in the top of the seventh, but Thiel answered with each of the first eight batters reaching base.

The 7, 8, and 9 batters all reached to lead off the top of the seventh for Alvernia and Ian Shaffer drive in a run with a sacrifice fly to left to put Alvernia up 4-3.  After Mike Cirilli was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Sides doubled to right to drive in a pair.
Shaffer was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs and Sides finished the game 2-for-5 with three RBIs.  With four games remaining on the spring trip, Sides is five hits behind A.J. Bohn (2000-03) for sixth all time in hits.  He needs 24 more RBIs to crack the career top 10.

Tim Carfrey started at went four and two-thirds innings allowing two runs on seven hits.  Frank Merlino gave up one of the runs in the seventh and was charged with the loss.

Alvernia returns to the diamond on Wednesday to face the Merchant Marine Academy.
