Winchester, Va. (Mar. 6, 2019) - Shenandoah University (4-1) scored nine goals in the first quarter and never looked back as the Hornets took the 19-7 win over Alvernia University (1-2) on Wednesday night at Shenandoah.
The Hornets took an early 2-0 lead with 7:28 left in the first quarter. Alvernia cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal by
Jarret Abernethy, but the Hornets went on a 7-0 run to close out the quarter with a 9-1 lead.
Shenandoah added three more before Alvernia struck again with a goal from
Thomas Fitzgerald to make it 12-2 in favor of the Hornets.
Alvernia was held scoreless the rest of the first half and trailed 15-2 at the half.
The Golden Wolves scored three more goals in the third quarter, with two coming from Abernethy and one from
Andrew Ritchie, but Alvernia still trailed Shenandoah 17-5 with 15 minutes left to play.
The Hornets and Golden Wolves scored two each in the fourth quarter, with Alvernia's goals coming from Ritchie and Sam. St. Croix, as Alvernia with 19-7.
Alvernia finished the game 0-5 on extra-man opportunities and was just 7-29 on faceoff attempts.
Abernethy led Alvernia's offensive efforts with three goals and an assist. Ritchie finished with a goal and four assists for the Golden Wolves.
Jacob O'Donnell played all 60 minutes in goal for Alvernia. O'Donnell finished with 19 saves on the night.
Alvernia continues on the road on Saturday with a game at La Roche College at 1:00 PM.
