Alvernia Sweeps Defiance To Close Spring Break Trip

Marotta And Reese Pick Up Wins

Ft. Myers, Fla. (Mar. 8, 2019) - Alvernia University (7-3) scored single runs in four different innings for a 4-1 win in the opener then had two huge innings in a 14-2 win in game two of a doubleheader sweep of Defiance College (5-2-1) Friday in non-conference baseball action.

Nicholas Marotta went six innings for the win in game one.  He allowed a run on four hits with four strikeouts. Jake Reese improved to 2-0 with the win in game two.  He allowed one unearned run on two hits over four innings.

Nathan Sides was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI in the opener. Alex Salesky was 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs in game two.  Ian Shaffer and Joe Ginder had two hits apiece in game two.

The Wolves drew a pair of two-out walks in the bottom of the first inning in game one and Sides scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at 1-1.  Gavin Blankenbiller singled in a run in the third inning, Sides had a run-scoring single in the fifth, and Logan Levan drove in a run in the sixth.

Alvernia exploded for six runs in the second inning of game two--the big blow a 2-run double from Mike Cirilli.  Defiance scored its first run off Reese in the bottom of the fourth, but Alvernia put the game away with eight runs in the seventh.  Salesky, Luca Grammatica, and Blankenbiller all delivered two-run hits in the inning.

Alvernia returns home from spring break then travels to The College of New Jersey on Tuesday before opening the conference schedule with Widener next Friday.
