Reading, Pa. (Apr. 10, 2019) - Alvernia University (21-10-1, 9-1) split a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader against Widener University (19-11, 4-4) on Wednesday afternoon at Alvernia University.
The Pride took game one in a 5-3 decision, while Alvernia rebounded for a 9-1 five inning win in game two.
In game one of the afternoon, the Pride took advantage of Alvernia mistakes to go up 3-0.
Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the third after
Sarah Reinert walked to lead off the inning and was advanced to third on a single by
JoAnnah Lim. With a first
and third situation, Lim forced a run down between first and second, allowing Reinert to score.
The Pride added a run in both the top of the sixth and top of the seventh to go up 5-1.
Alvernia chipped away in the bottom of the seventh when
Riley Shields doubled to the left field corner, allowing
Sarah Bystrycki and Reinert to score to cut
Widener's lead down to 5-3. The Golden Wolves had the tying run at the plate with two outs, but were unable to convert.
Shields went the distance for Alvernia, striking out four in the loss.
Shields also finished with two RBIs in a 2-for-4 game at the plate. Reinert went 2-for-3, and reached base successfully in four attempts with two hits, a walk, and reaching on an error.
Alvernia rebounded in game two, starting with Lim driving in Reinert on a single to right to put Alvernia up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
The Golden Wolves added two more in the bottom of the second to go up 3-0. With two outs,
Kerstin Koenig hit a double to right center, and advanced to third on a single by
Analise Fouracre. Reinert then drove in Koenig with a single up the middle, and
Morgan Psiuk brought in Fouracre with a single to left to cap off the inning.
The Pride got one back with a solo homer to center field to lead off the top of the fourth.
Alvernia used a big bottom of the fifth to seal the win. Lim started off the six run inning with a single up the middle to bring in Psiuk.
Alyssa Acker then singled to left field with bases loaded, and misplays by the Pride allowed three runs to score for Alvernia. Reinert then capped off the win with a single to left to drive in the final two runs of the inning and give Alvernia the 9-1 win.
Ally Decker earned the complete game win in the circle, striking out four.
Reinert again led Alvernia's offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Acker and Lim finished with two RBIs each.
The Golden Wolves return to the field on Saturday when they head to Arcadia to take on the Knights.
