Alvernia Sweeps Albright

Landy Throws 1-Hiiter In Game One

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 13, 2019) - Alvernia University (20-9-1, 11-3) swept Albright College (8-18, 4-10) 7-0 and 9-2 Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Albright.

Senior Zack Landy threw a 1-hitter in the opener and Nathan Sides pulled within five hits of the Alvernia career record going 6-for-7 in the doubleheader.

Landy faced 23 batters in the 7-inning complete game in game one throwing 85 pitches and strikeout out five.

The Lions got a 1-out single in the first inning and had a runner reach on an error in the second then went in order in each of the last five innings.

Alvernia had enough offense when senior Ian Shaffer launched the first pitch of the game out to left for a solo home run.  Two batters later Sides started his day with a 2-run shot to left that scored Mike Cirilli who reached on a walk.

Sides doubled in the third and finished a single shy of the cycle with a triple in the seventh.

Five different players had multi hit games for the Wolves.

Nicholas Marotta went five innings and allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts to earn the win in game two.  Sides went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. He passed Alvernia Hall of Famer Todd Meyer for second place on the Alvernia hits list with 254 and is five behind Hall of Famer Eric Bonds at 259.

Matt Briner went 2-for-4 in game two with a run scored and two RBIs.

Alvernia scored two in the third inning for a 2-0 lead and went up 3-1 with another run in the fifth.  The Golden Wolves sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh and scored six runs on five hits with an Albright error.  Nick Nutile delivered the big blow a 2-run homer to right center.

Alvernia and Albright wrap up the 3-game series on Sunday at Angelica Park.
