Reading, Pa. (Apr. 14, 2019) - Albright College (9-18, 5-10) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five innings and held on for a 9-5 win over Alvernia University (20-10-1, 11-4) on Sunday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Alvernia.
The Lions took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second on groundout to short, and would add a second run in top of the third on a triple down the right field line.
Albright went on to add three more runs in the top of fifth before Alvernia got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when
Grant Hackett drove in
Matt Briner on a groundout to short.
The Lions extended their lead to 9-1 with a four run top of the eighth.
The Golden Wolves got one back in the bottom of the eight with Hackett driving in Alex Salesy on a groundout to second.
Alvernia's offense produced too little too late with a four run bottom of the ninth to get within four of the lines.
Ian Shaffer got the inning started with a single up the middle and would come around to score on a
Mike Cirilli single to right.
Nathan Sides reached on a single and Briner walked to load the bases with no outs.
Colin Rieger then reached on a fielder's choice by the shortstop, allowing Cirilli to score. Salesky then drove in Sides on a groundout to second, but Hackett hit a flew out to left to end the game.
The Golden Wolves went through nine pitchers on the afternoon, with
Brian Kane getting the start and the loss in 2.1 innings of work.
Hackett went 1-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Alvernia, and
Mike Cirilli went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Sides went 1-for-4 to pull within four hits of Alvernia's career record.
The Golden Wolves return to action on Wednesday with an away game against Moravian College.
