Reading, Pa. (Apr. 16, 2019) - Albright College (15-15, 9-3) swept Alvernia University (21-14-1, 9-5) on Tuesday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth softball action at Alvernia.
The Lions took game one by a score of 7-3, and Albright then plated three runs in the top of the seventh in game two to complete a come from behind 5-3 win and seal the sweep.
In game one of the afternoon, the Lions took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run triple by Brooke Yerger.
Alvernia got one back in its half of the first with
JoAnnah Lim driving in
Morgan Psiuk with a single down the right field line.
The Golden Wolves would then go up 3-2 in the bottom of the second when
Analise Fouracre drove in two runs with a single to the left gap.
Alvernia would be held scoreless the rest of the way as the Lions plated a run in the top of the third, and added two more in both the fifth and the seventh.
Riley Shields went the distance in the circle for Alvernia, striking out five and allowing seven hits in the loss.
Fouracre went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while
Sarah Reinert went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Alvernia's offense.
Emily Carmella also reached base on all three of her at-bats with two walks and a single.
In game two of the afternoon, Albright again jumped out to an early lead with Yerger coming around to score on a single up the middle.
Alvernia tied it up in the bottom of the third with
Sarah Bystrycki hitting a sac fly to left field to bring in Fouracre.
The Lions retook the lead in the top of the fourth, but Alvernia again responded in its half of the inning with Carmella driving in
Alyssa Acker on a double down the right field line.
The Golden Wolves then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with Shields driving in
Sarah Reinert with a sac hit to right field.
The Lions then mounted a rally in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs with two outs.
The Golden Wolves loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but hit an infield fly and grounded out to the pitcher to end the game and give Albright the series sweep.
Ally Decker went all seven innings for Alvernia in the circle. She allowed 12 hits while striking out three.
Reinert again led Alvernia's offense with three hits on four attempts and one run scored.
The Golden Wolves have the weekend bye and will return to action on Thursday, April 25 with their final home doubleheader of the season against Ursinus College. They then close out their regular season and MAC Commonwealth schedule with a road doubleheader against Lycoming College on Saturday, April 27.
