Reading, Pa. (Apr. 25, 2019) - Alvernia University (23-14-1) combined for 21 runs and 24 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Ursinus College (18-16-1) on Thursday afternoon in non-conference softball action at Alvernia.
Alvernia took game one 12-2 in five innings, and won game two 9-5.
Ursinus was looking to get out to a fast start in game one, with the Bears loading the bases with one out. Alvernia, behind pitcher
Riley Shields, got out of the jam with a fly out and a ground out.
Alvernia's offense wasted no time, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Sarah Bystrycki drove in the first run of the inning with a single to center to bring in
Sarah Reinert, and Shields drove in the second round on a sacrifice hit to bring in Bystrycki.
The Golden Wolves batted around and added five in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 7-0. Psiuk, Bystrycki, and Shields all had RBIs on the inning.
Alvernia gave up two runs, both unearned, in the top of the third, but got three back in the bottom of the third with RBIs from Psiuk and Reinert.
Reinert drove in two more runs for Alvernia in the bottom of the fourth to give Alvernia the 10-2 lead and Shields retired the side in the top of the fifth to seal the 10-2 five inning win for Alvernia.
Shields went the distance in the circle, allowing just two hits and no earned runs while striking out four, including her 200th career strikeout.
Reinert led Alvernia's offense in game one with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate. She drove in three runs and scored three of her own while picking up her 100th career hit. Psiuk and Bystrycki also drove in three runs for the Golden Wolves.
In game two of the evening, Alvernia used a seven run bottom of the fourth to overcome a three run deficit en route to a 9-5 win.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a sacrifice hit and an infield single, and added one more in the top of the third on a single through the left side.
After being held to just one hit over the first three innings, Alvernia's offense found life in the bottom of the fourth. Shields started the inning off with a double to left center, and came around to score on the next at-bat with
Emily Carmella hitting a double to right center.
Alyssa Acker took advantage of a costly throwing error by the Bears, scoring on a single to left after a throwing error by Ursinus. Carmella also scored on the play. With two outs,
Analise Fouracre kept Alvernia going with a double to right center, and scored on a single by Reinert. Psiuk then hit Alvernia's fourth double of the inning, scoring Fouracre. Carmella capped off the big inning with a bases loaded single to left that brought in two runs and put Alvernia up 7-3.
Alvenria added two more in the bottom of the sixth on bases loaded walks.
The Bears got two back in the top of the seventh, but it would be too little too late.
Kealey Smith went four innings and allowed three runs and five hits in the win.
Ally Decker pitched three innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits.
Carmella led Alvernia's offense with a 2-for-3 performance and four RBIs.
Alvernia closes out its regular season on the road at Lycoming. Alvernia has clinched a spot in the MAC Commonwealth tournament, but is awaiting its final seeding.
