Sides Breaks Hits Record As Alvernia Rolls Past Stevenson, 8-1

Senior Passes Hall Of Famer Eric Bonds With Hit Number 260

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 18, 2019) - Senior Nathan Sides became the all-time hits leader at Alvernia University and the Golden Wolves (21-10-4, 12-4) defeated Stevenson University (15-18, 7-9) by an 8-1 final Thursday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Angelica Park.

Sides drove in a run in the first on a sacrifice fly, ripped a singled to left in the third to tie the hits record at 259, and doubled down the right field line in the sixth to drive in a pair and pass Alvernia Hall of Famer Eric Bonds (2003-06) for the most hits in a career.

Sides currently leads the nation in hits this season with 68 and is fifth in average at .507.

Ian Shaffer led off the game with a ringing double to left, moved up on a sac bunt by Mike Cirilli and scored easily on Sides' fly ball to right.

The Wolves doubled the lead in the third when Joe Ginder reached on an infield hit and took second on a throwing error by the pitcher.  He moved up on Shaffer's bunt single and scored on a second Mustang error of the inning.

Alvernia added four more in the fourth.  Colin Rieger homered to left on a ball that caromed off the top of the fence.  Shaffer singled to center to score Grant Hackett and Cirilli reached on an infield single that drove in two.

Rieger reached 100 career hits on a double in the bottom of the fifth.

Stevenson scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth and the Sides record-breaking double in the bottom of the sixth was the final scoring in the game.

Alvernia starter Jake Reese earned the win going five innings scattering four hits and three walks.  Senior Tom Malik returned to action with two solid innings allowing just the one unearned run on two hits and Christian Burrus pitched the final two innings and struck out three.
