Alvernia Locks Up Postseason Berth With Split At Stevenson

Marotta Picks Up Game Two Win

Owings Mill, Md. (Apr. 20, 2019) - Alvernia University (22-11-2, 13-5) split a doubleheader with Stevenson University (16-19, 8-10) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Stevenson.

Senior catcher Alex Salesky caught a runner trying to steal home in game two to tie the school record at 40 held by Alvernia Hall of Famer and Major League player Anthony Recker (2002-05).

Alvernia won the 3-game series thanks to the 8-1 win in Thursday's opener at Angelica Park and secured a berth in the postseason which starts Thursday, May 2, at PEOPLESBank Park in York.  Hood College and Arcadia have also secured berths. Stevenson, Widener, and Lebanon Valley are all alive for the final spot.

Stevenson won game one on Saturday, 7-5, behind a complete game effort from defending conference Pitcher of the Year, James Wiercinski.

Alvernia got a tie-breaking, 3-run home run from Ian Shaffer in a 9-5 win in game two.

Stevenson took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning of the opener.  Alvernia scored in the top of the fifth on a single by Joe Ginder then scored three in the sixth to take the lead.

Colin Rieger delivered a 2-run double to put Alvernia ahead 3-2 and Franco Esposito tacked on a run with a sacrifice fly.

Stevenson got a pair of RBI singles to retake a 4-3 lead then hit a 3-run home run for some added insurance.

Michael Griffin took the loss in relief of Zack Landy.  Rieger, Ginder, and Nathan Sides all had two-hit games for the Golden Wolves.

Alvernia wasted no time getting ahead in game two scoring three runs in the top of the first, but Stevenson answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 3-3.

Logan Levan walked with two out in the top of the fourth and Ginder followed with a single before Shaffer launched a shot out to left for a 6-3 lead.

Stevenson scored a run in the fifth and Ginder got that back with an RBI single in the sixth.  Rieger hit his second home run of the series, a two-run shot in the top of the seventh.

Nicholas Marotta went the distance for Alvernia allowing five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.

Alvernia is back in action on Monday when it hosts Penn State-Harrisburg in a non-conference game and will travel to Elizabethtown College on Wednesday before opening up the final conference series of the season at Arcadia on Friday.
