Reading, Pa. (Apr. 22, 2019) - Penn State Harrisburg (25-10-1) scored back-to-back home runs in the top of the fifth to go up 4-0 and went on to down Alvernia University (22-10-2) 7-4 in non-conference baseball action at Alvernia on Monday.
The Lions were held to just one hit going into the fifth before going double-single to start off the inning. The Lions then went up 1-0 on a sac fly to right. With two on and two outs, Miguel Torres homered to deep center field to put Penn State 3-0. In the next at-bat, Jackson Struve hit a solo shot to nearly the exact same location as Torres to put the Lions up 4-0.
Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single up the middle by
Sam Corn, but the Lions added two more to go up 6-1 in the top of the seventh.
The Golden Wolves again got within three of the Lions in the top of the seventh after Matthew Briner and
Colin Rieger each drove in runs to make it 6-3.
The Lions extended their lead back to four on a sac fly to right in the top of the eighth.
The Golden Wolves plated one more in the bottom of the ninth, but could not string anything together to catch the Lions.
Tim Carfrey went five innings for Alvernia, striking out for and allowing six hits, in the loss.
Briner went 3-for-5 at the plate for Alvernia with two RBIs.
Nathan Sides went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 19 games.
Alvernia closes out its non-conference schedule on Wednesday on the road at Elizabethtown. The Golden Wolves then close out the regular season with their three-game MAC Commonwealth series against Arcadia beginning on Friday.
