Frederick, Md (Apr. 6, 2019) - Alvernia University (18-9-1, 8-0) outscored Hood College (4-20, 0-8) by a combined score of 23-2 in a doubleheader sweep of the Blazers in MAC Commonwealth action on Saturday afternoon at Hood.
Alvernia took game one by a 14-1 decision in five innings, and took game two 9-1.
Alvernia took an early 1-0 lead in game one after
Sarah Bystrycki knocked in a run on a double to left field.
The Blazers tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first after the leadoff runner was walked and came around to score on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Alvernia put up four in the top of the second to make it 5-1, with
Analise Fouracre,
Sarah Reinert, and Bystrycki all driving in runs.
Alvernia extended its lead to 6-1 in the top of the third when
Riley Shields hit a solo shot over the fence in left center to lead off the inning.
The Golden Wolves added two more in the top of the fourth, with Shields hitting a single to deep center field to bring in
Morgan Psiuk, and
JoAnnah Lim scoring
later in the inning on a wild pitch.
Alvernia added its final six in the top of the fifth to go up 14-1. Psiuk scored Fouracre on a fielder's choice, and Lim doubled to left to bring in Psiuk and Reinert.
Shields then went deep for the second time, hitting a two-run homer just inside the left field foul pole for the final two runs of the game.
Shields led Alvernia's game one offensive efforts with a 3-for-4 effort from the plate and five RBIs. Bystrycki went a perfect 4-for-4, driving in three.
Shields also earned the complete game win in the circle. She pitched just 61 pitches, and faced just 19 batters. She allowed just one earned run and struck out five.
In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia again struck first when Shields scored on an error following a lineout by
Kerstin Koenig in the top of the second.
The Golden Wolves added a second run in the top of the third when Shields drove in Bystrycki on a single.
Alvernia doubled its lead with a two run top of the fourth.
Alyssa Acker drove in both runs of the inning with a single to right field.
The Blazers got one back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-1.
The Golden Wolves offense came up big with a five run top of the seventh to blow the game open. Alvernia batted around and hit four double, with runs being driven in by Acker,
Sara Campbell, Fouracre, Reinert and Bystrycki.
Decker went the distance in the circle for Alvernia, striking out three.
Acker led Alvernia's offense in game two, with three RBIs on four hits. Reinert went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs.
The Golden Wolves improve to 8-0 in MAC Commonwealth play with the sweep. They take a break from conference play on Monday when they host Rutgers-Camden on Monday. They resume to MAC Commonwealth play on Wednesday with a home doubleheader against Widener University.
