#2 Alvernia Advances With 5-3 Win Over #3 Stevenson

Thek Earns A Pair Of Points For The Golden Wolves

Reading, Pa. (May 1, 2019) - Second-seeded Alvernia University (15-4) got wins at four of the first five singles matches to earn a 5-3 win over #3 Stevenson University (8-7) Wednesday afternoon in semifinal action of the MAC Commonwealth Championships at Governor Mifflin Courts.

Alvernia returns to the final for the first time since 2016 when they finished runner-up to Messiah College.

The Golden Wolves and the Falcons will tangle again in this year's final at top-seeded Messiah at a time to be announced.  Messiah dispatched of #4 Lebanon Valley College, 5-0, in Wednesday's other semifinal.

Stevenson opened the scoring with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take an early 2-0 lead in Wednesday's semifinal.  The Mustangs won all three doubles matches four days ago when the two teams met in the regular season finale at Stevenson--a 5-4 Alvernia win.

Emily Thek and Laura Covely pulled out an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles to cut the deficit to just one point, 2-1, entering singles play.

Alvernia quickly took control of the match with Ariana Chuprinsky winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Thek following with a 3-2 win at No. 3.

Stevenson was able to secure one final point with Kelsi Mentzer winning in straight sets at No. 4 singles, but Alvernia closed out the match with Amanda Phillips winning 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 1 singles and Cassandra Bean claiming the fifth point with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.

Alvernia returns to Messiah for a rematch against the Falcons.  Messiah defeated Alvernia, 7-2, back on March 30.
