Alvernia Comes Up Short In MAC Commonwealth Championship

BOX SCORE Grantham, Pa. (May 4, 2019) - #2 Alvernia University fell behind 2-1 after doubles play and could not catch #1 Messiah College as the Falcons defeated the Golden Wolves 5-1 to win the 2019 MAC Commonwealth Women's Team title.

The Falcons opened the scoring with a win an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles over Emily Thek and Laura Covely. Messiah then went up 2-0 with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Cassandra Bean and Leah Kemper.

Alvernia avoided the doubles sweep with Amanda Phillips and Ariana Chuprinsky picking up the 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

Messiah needed to win just three singles matches to capture the MAC Commonwealth title, and they got to work quickly.  

The Falcons went up 3-1 with Thek falling 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Messiah got its fourth point shortly after at No. 4 singles with Covely falling 6-0, 6-1.

Messiah got its game winning point at No. 5 singles with Bean falling 6-1, 6-0 to end the match.

Chuprinsky's and Rachel Rineer's matches went unfinished.

Alvernia finishes the season at 15-5. The Golden Wolves were the regular-season runner-up in addition to the postseason runner-up.
