Reading, Pa (Aug. 30, 2019) - Junior
Morgan Mondschein scored a pair of goals and senior goalie
Emma Beamesderfer made six saves as Alvernia University (1-0) opened the season with a 2-0 win over Juniata College in non-conference field hockey action at Alvernia.
The Eagles and the Golden Wolves have opened the last five seasons facing off with Alvernia picking up three wins in those five games. Juniata was 8-3-1 in the previous 12 games in the series which dates back to the opener in 1995.
The NCAA moved Field Hockey to 15-minute quarters for the 2019 season and the two teams played scoreless through the first two with just three total shots and a save each for the two starting goalies.
Alvernia broke the ice three minutes into the third quarter. Reagan Downey emerged from a scrum in front of the Juniata cage and pushed a pass for Mondschein who netted the first of the season and the 21st of her career.
Ten minutes later Mondschein added some insurance on a corner play. The junior inserted the corner and took her spot near the post. The shot from the wing found its way through traffic and Mondschein stuffed it home.
Beamesderfer made four of her six saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the shutout including a strong drive from the front of the cage that she blockered away.
Alvernia continues opening weekend on Sunday at Haverford.
