BOX SCORE Center Valley, Pa. (Aug. 30, 2019) - DeSales University (1-0) went up 3-0 in the first 47 minutes and never looked back en route to a 5-1 win over Alvernia University (0-1) in the 2019 season opener Friday evening at DeSales.
Working off a turnover, Annie Brush worked the ball up the left side of the field and sent in an opposite side shot that got by Alvernia keeper
Lily Sankey.
Allie Hoff broke away from three Alvernia defenders and snuck a shot past Sankey and just inside the right post to put the Bulldogs up 2-0 with just under eight minutes to play in the first half.Â
The Bulldogs made it 3-0 on a bizarre series of events shortly after the second half got underway. DeSales got by Sankey and fired a shot off the crossbar and the ball appeared to come straight down as Sankey brought the ball in and play continued. After about 15 seconds, play stopped on the opposite half of the field as the officials got together and ruled the shot off the crossbar a goal, putting DeSales up 3-0 with 43 minutes left in the game.
Alvernia got on the board in the 62nd minute when
Taylor Gough sent in a free kick towards
Grace Silva. Silva got a header on the ball as it nearly went by her and a DeSales defender attempting to clear the ball instead knocked it into the net.Â
Just two minutes later, DeSales extended its lead back up to three with a goal from Vanessa Atie to make it 4-1
DeSales converted a one-on-one opportunity with just under five minutes remaining to go up 5-1.
Alvernia would not get off another shot opportunity as the Bulldogs took the 5-1 win.
Sankey played 82 minutes in goal, making four saves.
Riley Scepansky went in for the final eight minutes and made two saves.
Alvernia looks to get in the win column on Tuesday when the Golden Wolves host Lancaster Bible College in their 2019 home opener at 4:00 PM.
