Swarthmore, Pa, (Sept. 1, 2019) - Swarthmore College (2-0) overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Alvernia University (1-1), 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Swarthmore.
The Golden Wolves got on the board first when
Ammit Bhogal sent in a perfect pass from midfield that deflected off a defender's head and down to the feet of
Braden Kreider, who shot it past the keeper in the 28th minute.
Coming out of the half,
Luca Grippi made a spectacular diving save to keep Alvernia up 1-0, but six minutes later the Garnet got one by Grippi with a header off the right post to even it up at 1-1.
Nine minutes later in the 65th minute, the Garnet broke the 1-1 tie when Joe Barile drew Grippi to his right with a fake shot before sneaking one by his left hand to put the Garnet up 2-1.
The Golden Wolves were held shotless in the final 25 minutes of action as Swarthmore took the 2-1 win.
Kreider led Alvernia's offensive efforts with four shots and a goal. Grippi played all 90 minutes for Alvernia and finished with four saves.
Alvernia returns to action on Wednesday when the Golden Wolves host Rutgers-Camden at 4:00 PM.
