Lebanon, Pa. (Sept. 21, 2019) - Alvernia University (1-2, 0-1) had two costly fumbles in the first half, giving Lebanon Valley College (1-2, 1-0) the opportunity to go up 14-0 in the first quarter en route to a 31-12 win on Saturday afternoon in MAC play at Lebanon Valley College.
The Dutchmen scored on their opening drive of the game after an 89 yard drive was capped off with a 17 keeper from LVC quarterback Kody Kegarise.
Alvernia got the ball back and began marching down the field, but
Malcolm Carey lost the ball at LVC's five yard line.
After sacking Kegarise on 2nd down in the following drive, Alvernia's defense forced a punt by the Dutchmen, keeping the game at 7-0.
The Golden Wolves received the ball on their own 33 yard line and, again, began marching down field. But, the Golden Wolves lost the ball again, this time on a strip-sack that forced the ball out of
Kevin Washington Jr.'s hands. The Dutchmen scooped up the ball and returned it 47 yards to Alvernia's ten yard line. Lebanon Valley would score three plays later to go up 14-0.
Neither team found the end zone in the second quarter, but the Dutchmen did convert a 40 yard field goal attempt by Nick Bentz to go up 17-0 going into the break.
Both teams traded possessions to open up the second half, but Alvernia struck on the first play of its second drive of the half when
Darrius Sample found
Daniel Scott in the middle of the field. Scott got by the LVC secondary and found the endzone to make it 17-6.
The Golden Wolves defense held strong the remainder of the third quarter to keep it a 17-6 game.
The Dutchmen scored on a three play drive to open up the fourth quarter and to go up 24-6.
After the Golden Wolves were pinned on their own five yard on their first drive of the fourth quarter, the Dutchmen received their ball inside the red zone following a 12 yard punt. Four plays later, Kegarise found the end zone on a keeper to put the Dutchemen up 31-6.
Alvernia answered on the following possession, with
Malcolm Carey taking it 75 yards to the end zone on the opening play of the drive to make it 31-12.
The Golden Wolves would possess the ball one final time, but would have to punt it away.
Kevin Washington and
Darrius Sample split time behind center. Washington went 5-for-10 with 33 yards, and had 19 yards rushing on five attempts. Sample was 2-for-8 with 41 yards passing and had 45 yards rushing on 10 attempts.
Carey reached over 100 yards for the third straight game, rushing for 155 yards on 14 attempts. Scott finished with 61 rushing yards on 12 attempts, and had 39 yards receiving on his touchdown reception.
Alvernia finished with more total offensive yards - 288 yards to 264 yards - and more first downs- 14 first downs to 12 first downs - than the Dutchmen.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Tajon Whiten finished with 10 tackles and a forced fumble.
Tyler Strunk finished with three tackles, and had an interception in the second quarter in the end zone.
CJ Zimmerman and
Christian Francis each had a sack.
Alvernia continues its MAC schedule on Saturday, September 28th when the Golden Wolves host Widener University for a 1:00 PM kickoff. Widener is currently 1-1 in MAC play.
