Reading, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2019) - Alvernia University (3-1) went 3-4 for in a shootout following double overtime to defeat Lynchburg University (1-1) on Saturday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Alvernia.
After giving up a 2-0 lead, Alvernia survived two overtime periods to force the shootout, where Alvernia made three of its for attempts and
Emma Beamesderfer made three saves on four attempts from the Hornets.
Alvernia got on the board first with a goal from
Erica Groves in the 12th minute of action.
Emily Hart found Groves off of a corner attempt, and Groves fired into net to put Alvernia up 1-0.
Just two minutes later, Groves connected with
Madison Potthoff to put Alvernia up 2-0. With the Golden Wolves again working off of a corner, Groves received the ball on the input and quickly passed it to Potthoff, who sent a hard shot into the goal.
With three minutes left in the half, the Hornets got on the board with Kessa Romero collecting the rebound off of her own shot, and firing a quick second shot into goal.
Both teams went cold in the third quarter, but Lynchburg's offense game alive in the fourth. The Hornets got one by Beamesderfer in the 49th minute when Emily Dudley picked up her own rebound, pulling Beamesderfer out of position with her initial shot, and fired a second shot past Beamesderfer and three other Alvernia defenders to tie it at 2-2.
Beamesderfer made two saves late in the quarter to force overtime.
The Hornets went into the first overtime period while holding Alvernia's offense at bay. The Hornets got off seven shots in the first overtime period, with Beamesderfer making three saves to extend the game to a second overtime.
In the second overtime of the night, the Hornets got off a quick shot early that was saved by Beamesderfer.
Taylor Miltner got off a shot for the Golden Wolves with three minutes left in the period, but the attempt was saved by the Hornet keeper.
The Golden Wolves had the first attempt in the shootout, with
Brooke Spezialetti making her attempt. The Hornets missed on their first attempt, with Alvernia missing on its second attempt. The Hornets missed on their second attempt as well, and Alvernia extended its advantage with
Erica Groves making her shot attempt. The Hornets made their third attempt, but Alvernia finished things off with
Brianna Buckley converting her attempt.
Along with the three stops in the shootout, Beamesderfer finished the night with 11 saves.
Alvernia continues its non-conference schedule on Wednesday with a road game against Gettysburg.
